STUDIO 4/4: SACHA ROBOTTI
With a REAL name like Robotti, it may seem obvious that you’re set for a life working in a synthesizer factory or in Artificial Intelligence. However, this Italian-German, Belgium-bred, third-culture polyglot with a Russian first name, has a huge talent for music, which surfaced very quickly when he started to play the cello from age 7. In his teens in the '90s, Sacha discovered the rumblings of the underground house and techno scene of his native Brussels, which inspired him so much that he put down the bow and picked up the turntables. Influenced by the greats of this era: Green Velvet, Aphex Twin, Jeff Mills, DJ Funk, Thomas Bangalter, Dave Clarke, he was soon honing and mastering his own DJ skills. Upon graduating with an architecture degree from Edinburgh, he moved to Berlin to get fully submerged in the underbelly of the city’s nightlife.
Although Sacha’s sound has evolved throughout the years, you can recognize his signature in everything he creates: meandering between the dirty bass-heavy “booty” plains of electronic dance music and its futuristic shores; his music is funky, creative, has character, uses a palette of rich sounds and tells a story with layers of depth and emotion. It also has a sonic quality that makes it stand out.
When it comes to eclecticism, no other electronic musician can replicate the sheer ingenuity that David Pezzner invokes within his mosaic compositions. Hailing from Seattle’s enlightened indie-music scene, the multifarious studio mogul has steadily supplied a series of notable releases since the early '90s. After initially fulfilling career ventures as one half of classic house outfit Jacob London, his sights have recently shifted towards a more independent musical outlet: his prolific solo project, Pezzner. Unhindered by the industry’s often-scrupulous guidelines, David’s artistic reinvention has amassed considerable acclaim in light of its obstinate diversity – exploring a kaleidoscopic assortment of styles and sounds.
From House to Progressive to Tech to Deep to Disco, this night is all about 4/4 dance music as interpreted and presented by members of Lost Boys, Decibel, Flammable, Inner Flight and Trashed. Every Thursday night at Q.
